We train educators to create a classroom culture that builds viewpoint diversity into conversations about contentious science issues. This creates a community of learners who are committed to overcome harmful practices that have led to public disengagement from science. This allows students to build skills to grapple with science issues that are complex, uncertain, and divisive.
The following trainings are available for educators:
1 – Teacher training workshops: “The Dialogic Classroom”
Classroom dialogues help students listen to diverse viewpoints and to share their own about complex and controversial science issues. This workshop trains teachers who seek to create classrooms where students feel “safe enough” to share their ideas, beliefs and values and to listen to learn about those of others.
2 – Creating your own classes that teach the principles and practice of Civic Science
These trainings help educators apply Civic Science principles to create experiential learning where students practice skills needed to engage with the societal impact of their work.
Building skills, knowledge and awareness in Cultural HumilityCultural Humility asks us to examine our own cultural background, so we can better understand the complexities of the cultural backgrounds of others. We train educators to help students apply Cultural Humility to broaden the inclusion of others in science.
Exploring Power and Privilege in Science and ResearchWe train educators to help students create more equity around power and professional status in science– in particular for junior faculty, women, and people of color. Classroom dialogues help participants gain a better sense of their relationship to power and understand how this influences participation in science and research.
Building Diversity in Science and ResearchDiversity matters for the sake of science itself as a human experience. We train educators to equip students with skills they need to welcome diverse identities, forms of knowledge and ideas into their research.
Inclusive Science CommunicationEducators are trained to provide students with skills that work to overcome legacies of mistrust in science. We train educators to build student skills needed to acknowledge and address social inequities that people historically underrepresented in science have experienced.
Moving Towards Equity in Science and ResearchWe train educators to equip students to “lead with listening” to those most impacted by research inequities so they can better address their priorities.
